Geolocation Test
Find out how precisely your device can be located. The tool reads your browser position (GPS, Wi-Fi or cell towers), plots it on a map and measures the distance to where IP databases place your address.
Two ways to locate you
Websites can estimate your location from your IP address — coarse, usually accurate to a city — or ask your browser for the Geolocation API, which combines GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks and can be accurate to a few metres. The second way always needs your permission.
Why the two positions differ
IP databases know which provider owns an address, not where the device physically is. On mobile networks, corporate networks or with a VPN, the IP position can be hundreds of kilometres off. The tool shows the exact distance to every database.
Permission and privacy
The browser asks before sharing your position, and you can revoke it in the site settings. This page reads the position locally and does not send it to any server; the coordinates are shown only to you.
Accuracy classes
A few tens of metres means GPS or a strong Wi-Fi fix. Hundreds of metres to a few kilometres usually means Wi-Fi or cell-tower positioning. Larger values indicate a coarse network-based estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my browser not ask for permission?
The permission may already be blocked. Click the lock icon in the address bar, allow location for this site and try again. Geolocation also requires a secure HTTPS page.
Why is the accuracy poor on my computer?
Desktops have no GPS. They estimate the position from nearby Wi-Fi networks and the IP address, which is often accurate only to a few hundred metres or a few kilometres.
Does the tool send my coordinates to your server?
No. The Geolocation API result stays in your browser. Only your IP address, which every request reveals anyway, is used to look up the database locations.
Can a VPN change my GPS location?
No. A VPN changes your IP address but not the position reported by GPS or Wi-Fi. That mismatch is exactly what this tool helps you see.
